How does Travel affect your Staff?

Gordon Tan - Saturday, October 23, 2010
Current trends as analysed in a recent pole by Bullhorn across 50 IT Recruitment Agencies predict IT professionals to be the most in demand employee in 2011.

Over the last 6 months in Australia the candidate market has tightened up quite considerably. Where once upon a time you would put an ad on Seek and receive 50 resumes, with the hardest part of the process being sifting through the huge volume of responses, now you are lucky if you get 15. The reality is, the market has shifted and is now extremely candidate short. With an abundance of options for a talented candidate, and the Y generation now invading the workforce with their focus on “Quality of Life/Work Life Balance” I believe travel time to and from work contributes significantly to whether an employee will accept, and stay in a role long term.

The Data
This survey was conducted by Deacon Recruitment through approximately 150 candidates across the IT sector:
  • System Administrators
  • SBS Consultants
  • Network Engineers
  • Software Engineers
  • Service Desk/Help Desk
  • Accounts/Administration (IT)
Our admin team conducted this survey while doing reference checks in the form of some simple questions:

Suggestions

  • Offer flexible work hours
  • Employees that can start at 9:30AM and finish at 6:00PM are saving approximately an hour per day in travel time due to Brisbane’s congestion woes. This is a major drawcard to potential employees!
  • Create a fantastic work environment
  • Nothing beats a great work environment, vibrant culture and job satisfaction!
  • Take into account location when Recruiting - particularly along known congestion routes
